There were more than bragging rights at stake as two Utica Community Schools crosstown rivals squared off each other recently on the basketball court.

Malow and Shelby junior high school teams used their December 5 season opener to raise $3,100 to support a local charity drive for area families.

A large crowd of spectators supported the charity drive and were able to watch the eighth-grade Shelby Wildcats defeat the Malow mustangs 36-25.

“The team fed off the energy of the crowd, which I think helped us win the game,” Shelby Junior co-captain Brian White II.

In the seventh-grade game, the Mustangs defeated the Wildcats 43-22.

The real winner, however, was the Hamlin Holiday Fund – a partnership with the Hamlin Pub - which annually provides 40 to 50 UCS families with a traditional meal at both Thanksgiving and Christmas, in addition to Christmas gifts.

To create greater excitement for the game, the two junior high schools played at the Eisenhower High School gym, which will soon home court for many of the players.

The atmosphere was like a high school varsity rivalry game, complete with a pep band, cheerleaders, game announcers and a huge crowd of spectators.
